A total of 61 hospitals in New York received recognition as standout performers in key measures for different specialty care categories, a health care consumer research group reported.
The top specialty care ratings ranged from cardiac and stroke care to gastrointestinal surgery and joint replacement, according to the Healthgrades’ report. A total of 16 hospitals across the Finger Lakes, Hudson Valley and Southern Tier regions got at least one specialty care award from the group, which is part of RVO Health, a partnership between Red Ventures and Optum, part of UnitedHealth Group.
The specialty care ratings come as New York’s health system overall has received subpar safety and quality rankings, despite spending more than other states on health care.
How New York hospitals received top specialty care ratings
Hospitals that received specialty care awards from Healthgrades were among the top 10% of hospitals nationally specializing in these areas. The group evaluated outcomes at more than 4,500 hospitals across 31 common procedures and conditions for the awards.

What to know about hospital ratings
New York has historically had some of the worst rankings for hospital quality and safety in the country based on some other consumer groups and federal quality ratings. But hospital trade groups have disputed many of the rankings, citing a lack of uniform standards as well as varying timeframes for data reviews that failed to account for the complexities of health care delivery.
While the differences between rankings are connected to the scoring measures used, experts say patients should try to be aware of the results in each respective system because they focus on a variety of important issues.
