MORGANTOWN — A Mon Health Medical Center surgeon was recently awarded the designation of master surgeon in robotic surgery by a national certification nonprofit.
The Raleigh, North Carolina-based Surgical Review Corporation, a nonprofit organization that “develops and administers best-in-class accreditation programs for medical professionals, surgeons, hospitals and freestanding outpatient facilities throughout the world,” according to their website, honored physician Byron Dodson for skills in robotic surgery.
The Master Surgeon designation is awarded to physicians who meet the SRC’s standards for experience, skill, and patient outcomes. To earn this honor, Dodson underwent a thorough evaluation process including a review of surgical outcomes, techniques, and ongoing professional education.
“I am honored to receive the Master Surgeon designation by the Surgical Review Corporation,” Dodson said. “My priority has always been providing positive outcomes for my patients, and robotic surgery is oftentimes the best way to achieve these results. I’m proud to be able to offer my patients this exceptional standard of care in robotic surgery in our local community.”
Robotic surgery utilizes advanced systems to assist surgeons in performing complex procedures with greater precision, flexibility, and control. Instead of directly manipulating surgical instruments, surgeons operate robotic arms from a console equipped with a high-definition, 3D camera and hand controls.
Robotic surgery often results in shorter recovery times, smaller incisions, and reduced post-operative pain compared to traditional surgical methods.
Dodson specializes in general surgery and has performed more than 400 robotic-assisted surgeries including colon, rectal, biliary, hernia and numerous other general abdominopelvic procedures.
“We are so honored and proud of Dr. Dodson’s recognition as a master surgeon in robotics. This esteemed recognition represents Dr. Dodson’s commitment to providing the highest standard of care and delivering outstanding results with exceptional skill and expertise to our patients across the region at Mon Health Medical Center. He joins a cadre of surgeons who are leaders in robotic surgery and appreciate such advanced care right here close to home,” said David Goldberg, president and CEO of Mon Health System and Davis Health System – Vandalia Health North, and Executive Vice President of Vandalia Health. “Dr. Dodson’s achievement underscores the importance of continuing education and innovation in our surgical care.”
