The Marin County-based medical center earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery for performance measures that include surgical intervention, preoperative and postoperative patient-reported outcomes and surgical-site infection rates.
Sutter Health’s Novato Community Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery, the Sacramento-based health care system announced Feb. 28.
The Marin County hospital was recognized for its commitment to providing high-quality spine care, with performance measures that include surgical intervention, preoperative and postoperative patient-reported outcomes, surgical-site infection rates and more, according to the Joint Commission. The Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based Joint Commission is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit that accredits more than 22,000 U.S. health care organizations and programs for multiple specialties, according to its website.
Novato Community Hospital is the only hospital in the North Bay to have received the designation for advanced certification in spine surgery, and one of three in the state, according to the announcement. The other two are the University of California San Diego Medical Center, and Washington Hospital Healthcare System in Fremont.
The Joint Commission recognized Novato Community Hospital following a two-day, in-person evaluation Feb. 21 and Feb. 22, and was found to adhere to evidence-based practices and demonstrate a commitment to continuous quality improvement in spine care, according to Sutter Health’s press release.
“This certification reflects the exceptional work of our team of surgeons, nurses, physical therapists and support staff,” said Jennifer Lehr, senior director of orthopedic programs at Novato Community Hospital. “Spinal issues can be life-altering, impacting mobility and overall well-being.”
Spine surgery may be recommended for patients with severe conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spinal fractures or deformities such as scoliosis that cause chronic pain or limit mobility.
“Novato Community Hospital is the only hospital in the Sutter system to achieve this advanced recognition,” CEO Lisa Gammon said in the announcement. “I am incredibly proud of this team for consistently raising the bar in patient care.”
