Providing ‘expert care’: SIUH names new director of pediatric surgery

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Northwell Staten Island University Hospital has appointed a new director of pediatric surgery, who will oversee the expansion of pediatric surgical services, the Ocean Breeze hospital has announced.

Dr. Angela Hanna will introduce new surgical techniques and grow the pediatric surgery team to include three surgeons, according to a recent hospital announcement.

“She is committed to expanding access to high-quality pediatric surgical care, ensuring that families can get the expert care they need without the burden of traveling far from home,‘’ the announcement said.

Hanna’s appointment builds upon her 14 years of experience in general pediatric surgery, with a focus on minimally invasive surgery in neonates and children of all ages.

She specializes in pediatric colorectal surgery, adolescent breast and ovarian disease and pediatric trauma. Her career includes various leadership roles, notably serving as trauma medical director, surgical extracorporeal membrane oxygenation director and surgical Pediatric Intensive Care Unit director at Children’s Nebraska.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Hanna to SIUH,” said Dr. Jonathan Blau, interim chair of pediatrics at SIUH. “Her leadership will bolster the hospital’s focus on medical education, mentorship and clinical innovation, while enhancing our capacity to provide exceptional care to pediatric patients and their families. With Dr. Hanna’s expertise, SIUH is poised to become a leading center for pediatric surgery in the area.”

Hanna is an advocate for global health care, serving with multiple medical organizations on missions across numerous countries and providing surgical care to those without resources for nearly 20 years.

“My desire to follow a career in medicine stemmed from my grandmother’s influence, a World War II Army nurse who helped liberate prisoners from concentration camps,” Hanna said. “I admired her compassion and dedication and wanted to follow in her path, not just helping people but in truly making a difference.”

Her expertise in the pediatric field has earned her numerous prestigious accolades, including the Castle Connolly Top Doctor distinction and the Recognition of Excellence Award from the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.

In addition to her clinical work, Hanna is a passionate educator, who has guided medical students, residents and fellows throughout her career. She currently serves as an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Hempstead, New York.

Hanna obtained her medical degree from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City.

She subsequently completed her residency at the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education, Rochester, Minnesota, where she served as chief resident. She then pursued fellowships at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Queens, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Hanna is triple board-certified in general surgery, surgical critical care and pediatric surgery.
